Parents often ask whether sports and hobbies can help children cope with divorce. The research below is about physical activity and children’s mental health in general, not divorce in particular, but it gives a useful guide.

Mental health benefits

A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis in Sports Medicine included 114 studies. Combining intervention studies, it found a small but significant effect of physical activity on mental health in children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 (effect size about 0.17). The authors noted more studies are needed to confirm effects in younger children.

Self-esteem

A 2016 review in Pediatrics of 22 studies on how physical activity affects cognitive and mental health in youth found the strongest evidence for improved physical self-perceptions, which came with higher self-esteem in most studies that measured it. Few studies examined biological mechanisms, so the reasons are not fully understood.

Using this after a divorce

  • Choose an activity the child enjoys, not one chosen for them.
  • Keep the schedule predictable. Regular routines help children after changes at home.
  • Agree with your co-parent who drives, pays and attends so the child is not caught in the middle.
  • Both parents can attend games if it is calm and child-focused.
  • Watch for changes in mood, sleep or school. Ask a school counsellor or doctor if worried.

Frequently asked questions

Does sport help children cope with divorce?

The research reviewed is about children’s mental health in general. It found small benefits of physical activity, so activity is a reasonable support, not a substitute for professional help.

Which activities are best?

The reviews do not name a best activity. The key is something the child enjoys and can stick with.

Can sport boost a child’s confidence?

The 2016 review found the strongest evidence for improved physical self-perceptions, which came with higher self-esteem in most studies measuring it.
